Excess Pressure Inside a Drop and a Bubble01:13

Excess Pressure Inside a Drop and a Bubble

3.4K
The shape of a small drop of liquid can be considered spherical, neglecting the effect of gravity. This drop can further be considered as two equal hemispherical drops put together due to surface tension. The forces acting on the spherical drop are due to the pressure of the liquid inside the drop, the pressure due to air outside the drop, and the force due to the surface tension acting on the two hemispherical drops.

Microbial Morphologies01:29

Microbial Morphologies

2.0K
Bacterial and archaeal cells exhibit remarkable diversity in shape and structure, critical in their adaptability and functionality. Among bacteria, the most commonly observed shapes include cocci and bacilli. Cocci are spherical and may exist singly or in groupings such as pairs (diplococci), chains (streptococci), clusters (staphylococci), or tetrads. Bacilli, in contrast, are rod-shaped and can also occur as single cells, in pairs, or chains, depending on their environmental and genetic...

Generation Time01:22

Generation Time

1.4K
Bacterial generation time, the period required for a bacterial population to double during its exponential growth phase, serves as a critical measure of microbial growth dynamics under optimal conditions. This parameter varies significantly across bacterial species and can be influenced by factors such as temperature, pH, and the availability of nutrients. For example, Escherichia coli can achieve a generation time of approximately 20 minutes, while Mycobacterium tuberculosis exhibits a much...

Mixing Time01:19

Mixing Time

477
The concept of mixing time is significant in producing a uniform concrete mix with the required strength. The mixing period starts once all components are in the mixer. Initially, the mixer is charged with 10% of the water, followed by the consistent addition of solids and then 80% of the water. The remaining water is added later, within the first quarter of the mixing period. The minimum mixing time varies according to the mixer's capacity; for example, mixers with up to 1 cubic yard...

Mean free path and Mean free time01:22

Mean free path and Mean free time

5.1K
Consider the gas molecules in a cylinder. They move in a random motion as they collide with each other and change speed and direction. The average of all the path lengths between collisions is known as the "mean free path."

Time Course of Drug Effect01:14

Time Course of Drug Effect

2.6K
The progression of a drug's impact can be analyzed by examining both the concentration-time course and the effect-time course. The concentration-time course is determined by the drug's half-life and is influenced by factors such as its pharmacokinetics, including absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination. The effect of the drug is often related to its concentration in the plasma and is calculated using the maximum drug effect and the plasma concentration that generates 50...

Summary

Prolonged home teeth whitening with 10% carbamide peroxide (10% PC) can alter enamel ultrastructure, chemical composition, and microhardness. While roughness remained unchanged, excessive bleaching negatively impacted microhardness.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Biomaterials
  • Conservative Dentistry

Background:

  • Home bleaching using 10% carbamide peroxide (10% PC) is a popular aesthetic dental treatment.
  • Concerns exist regarding the potential effects of prolonged or excessive application times on dental enamel properties.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of prolonged 10% carbamide peroxide (10% PC) home bleaching on tooth enamel characteristics.
  • Investigate changes in roughness, microhardness, ultrastructure, chemical composition, and crystalline structure.

Main Methods:

  • Enamel specimens were subjected to different durations of 10% carbamide peroxide (10% PC) application: recommended (14 days), prolonged (21 days), and excessive (28 days).
  • Evaluated parameters included surface roughness, microhardness, enamel ultrastructure via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and elemental composition using dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (DXS).

Main Results:

  • No significant changes in enamel roughness were observed across all groups.
  • A decrease in microhardness was noted in the excessively bleached group (100% longer duration).
  • Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed surface alterations in enamel for groups receiving recommended, prolonged, and excessive bleaching.
  • Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (DXS) detected changes in the elemental composition (O, Mg, P, K) in all treated groups.

Conclusions:

  • Prolonged home bleaching with 10% carbamide peroxide (10% PC) can induce detrimental changes to tooth enamel.
  • These changes affect enamel ultrastructure, chemical composition, and microhardness, particularly with excessive application times.
