Summary

Capability for suicide, including fearlessness about death and pain tolerance, did not differentiate between suicide ideators and attempters in a study of psychiatric inpatients. Further research is needed to understand these critical differences.

  • Suicide ideation often precedes suicide attempts, but most ideators do not attempt suicide.
  • Understanding the factors differentiating ideation from action is crucial for suicide prevention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if capability for suicide (fearlessness about death, pain tolerance) differentiates suicide ideators from attempters.
  • To compare single vs. multiple attempters and recent vs. distant attempters based on these capabilities.

Main Methods:

  • A total of 308 psychiatric inpatients with suicide ideation were assessed.
  • Measures included fearlessness about death, subjective pain tolerance, and objective pain persistence (using a pressure algometer).

Main Results:

  • No significant differences were found in fearlessness about death, subjective pain tolerance, or objective pain persistence between suicide ideators and attempters.
  • These capability aspects also did not differentiate between single vs. multiple or recent vs. distant attempters.

Conclusions:

  • Fearlessness about death, subjective pain tolerance, and objective pain persistence may not be key differentiators between suicide ideation and attempts.
  • Additional research is necessary to identify factors distinguishing suicide ideators from those who attempt suicide.
