    Summary

    Transitional cell carcinoma in bladder diverticula is rare but aggressive. Carcinomas within the diverticulum itself led to metastasis and death, unlike those near or remote from it.

    Area of Science:

    Background:

    • Bladder diverticula are outpouchings of the bladder wall.
    • Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) is the most common type of bladder cancer.

    Observation:

    • A 15-year study identified 146 patients with bladder diverticula.
    • Nine patients (6.2%) had associated TCC of the bladder.

    Findings:

    • Three TCC cases (2% of all diverticula patients) were located within the diverticulum.
    • These three patients died of metastases.
    • The remaining six TCC patients (adjacent or remote to the diverticulum) survived over 5 years.

    Implications:

    • Aggressive treatment is recommended for TCC within bladder diverticula.
    • Routine diverticulectomy is not advised for asymptomatic or uncomplicated diverticula.
