Communication

Communication between two animals occurs when one animal transmits an information signal that causes a change in the animal that receives the information. Organisms communicate with one another in a host of different ways. Signals can be auditory, chemical, visual, tactile, or a combination of these. Communication is a critical behavioral adaptation that promotes survival, growth, and reproduction.

Sharing information, concepts, and emotions to foster mutual understanding is communication. The sender, recipient, and transaction must be considered in this manner. The sender is the person who shares the message, the recipient is the person who receives and understands the message, and the transaction is the method used to deliver the message and the variables that affect the communication's context and surroundings. The nurse-client connection is built on therapeutic communication.

Background:

Effective teamwork and communication are vital for patient outcomes.
Subjective assessments of team performance have inherent biases.
Objective communication features offer a potential bias-free alternative for performance evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

To test the hypothesis that objective communication features can assess and predict clinical performance in medical trainees.
To explore the relationship between quantifiable speech variables and clinical performance during a simulated trauma care scenario.

Main Methods:

Forty 3rd-year medical students participated in an Acute Care Trauma Simulation.
Audio recordings of team interactions were analyzed for speech variables (e.g., duration, frequency, intensity).
Statistical analyses correlated communication variables with clinical performance scores.

Main Results:

Student-initiated communication comprised the majority (67%).
Communication patterns (speech ratio, intensity, frequency) differed between student-nurse and student-patient interactions.
Increased frequency of check-backs (student-nurse) and speech duration (student-patient) positively correlated with clinical performance (p < 0.05 and p=0.001, respectively).

Conclusions:

Objective communication features effectively predict medical trainee clinical performance.
This approach provides an objective method for evaluating performance in simulation-based trauma care training.
