    Summary

    This study examines appendicitis with diverticula, finding a higher perforation rate in patients with this condition. Early appendicectomy is recommended if diverticula are discovered during surgery.

    Background:

    • Appendicitis is a common surgical emergency.
    • Diverticulosis of the appendix, though rare, can complicate appendicitis.
    • Congenital diverticula of the appendix are exceptionally uncommon.

    Observation:

    • A retrospective study analyzed 10 years of appendiceal diverticulosis cases.
    • The incidence was 0.65%, with two cases involving rare congenital diverticula.
    • Patients with appendicitis and acquired diverticula were older (average 37.8 years).

    Findings:

    • The perforation rate for inflamed appendices with diverticula was 27%, significantly higher than the 6.6% without diverticula.
    • Congenital diverticula represent a very small fraction of appendiceal diverticulosis cases.
    • Acquired diverticula are associated with a higher incidence of perforation in appendicitis.

    Implications:

    • Appendiceal diverticula, especially congenital types, are associated with increased perforation risk.
    • Prophylactic appendicectomy is suggested when diverticula are incidentally found during laparotomy.
    • Early detection and management of appendiceal diverticula may reduce complications.
