Redox Titration: Other Oxidizing and Reducing Agents01:26

Redox Titration: Other Oxidizing and Reducing Agents

1.4K
Besides iodine, other oxidizing or reducing agents can serve as titrants in redox titrations. Common oxidizing titrants include KMnO4, cerium(IV), and K2Cr2O7. The choice of oxidizing titrants depends on factors like stability, cost, analyte strength, and reaction rate between the analyte and titrant. KMnO4 is a strong oxidizing titrant that reduces from Mn(VII) to Mn(II) in a highly acidic solution, simultaneously oxidizing the analyte to a higher oxidation state. In this case, KMnO4 acts as a...

Oxidation Numbers03:14

Oxidation Numbers

42.3K
In redox reactions, the transfer of electrons occurs between reacting species. Electron transfer is described by a hypothetical number called the oxidation number (or oxidation state). It represents the effective charge of an atom or element, which is assigned using a set of rules.

Pyruvate Oxidation01:15

Pyruvate Oxidation

168.5K
After glycolysis, the charged pyruvate molecules enter the mitochondria via active transport and undergo three enzymatic reactions. These reactions ensure that pyruvate can enter the next metabolic pathway so that energy stored in the pyruvate molecules can be harnessed by the cells.
First, the enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase removes the carboxyl group from pyruvate and releases it as carbon dioxide. The stripped molecule is then oxidized and releases electrons, which are then picked up by NAD+...

Reducing Line Loss01:18

Reducing Line Loss

372
In a three-phase circuit, line loss is an indicator of energy dissipated as heat due to the resistance of transmission lines. To address this, incorporating transformers into the system—a step-up transformer at the source and a step-down transformer at the load—is a strategic solution. Two three-phase transformers are introduced to improve this.
With a step-up transformer at the source, the voltage is increased, thereby reducing the current in the transmission lines since power loss in...

Methods of reducing fever01:22

Methods of reducing fever

1.3K
The signs and symptoms of fever include hot and dry skin, flushed face, thirst, muscle aches, anorexia, headache, tachycardia, tachypnea, and fatigue. Elevated body temperature is reduced using two methods: pharmacological and nonpharmacological. Proper identification and treatment of the root cause of a fever is of utmost importance.

Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Polymer Chemistry
  • Nanotechnology

Background:

  • Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is a promising material due to its unique properties.
  • Polybenzoxazines are high-performance thermosetting polymers with excellent thermal and mechanical properties.
  • Functionalizing rGO with polymers can enhance composite material performance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To synthesize novel polybenzoxazine products integrated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO).
  • To investigate the structural characteristics and properties of the synthesized rGO-based polybenzoxazine.
  • To understand the relationship between polybenzoxazine polymerization and graphene oxide exfoliation.

Main Methods:

  • Synthesis of amino-functionalized rGO.
  • Grafting benzoxazine structures onto the rGO surface.
  • Characterization using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

Main Results:

  • Successful synthesis of rGO-based polybenzoxazine products confirmed by FT-IR, ¹H NMR, XPS, and XRD.
  • Polybenzoxazine chains were successfully attached to the rGO surface.
  • XRD data indicated partial exfoliation of graphene oxide layers, correlated with the degree of polybenzoxazine polymerization.
  • Higher polymerization degrees resulted in lower exfoliation due to intramolecular bonding within polybenzoxazine chains.

Conclusions:

  • Novel rGO-based polybenzoxazine materials were successfully synthesized and characterized.
  • The degree of polybenzoxazine polymerization is a critical factor controlling the exfoliation of graphene oxide sheets.
  • The findings provide insights into designing advanced graphene-polymer nanocomposites with tailored properties.
