A new flexible UV-curable hyperbranched polyurethane acrylate (FHBPUA) was synthesized. This material enhances UV-curing speed, flexibility, and mechanical properties in epoxy acrylate resins.
Area of Science:
- Polymer Chemistry
- Materials Science
Background:
- Hyperbranched polymers offer unique properties.
- Polyurethane acrylates are key in UV-curable systems.
Purpose of the Study:
- Synthesize a novel UV-curable hyperbranched polyurethane acrylate (FHBPUA).
- Evaluate FHBPUA as a functional additive for epoxy acrylate resins.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of FHBPUA via reaction of hydroxyl-terminated hyperbranched polyurethane with urethane monoacrylate.
- Characterization of FHBPUA structure and properties (degree of branching, thermal decomposition, glass transition temperature).
- Formulation of epoxy acrylate resins with varying FHBPUA content.
Main Results:
- FHBPUA synthesized with a degree of branching of 0.82, glass transition temperature of 65 °C.
- FHBPUA films exhibit rapid UV-curing (3 s) and high flexibility (1 mm).
- Addition of 10 wt% FHBPUA reduced UV-curing time, enhanced flexibility and adhesion, without affecting glossiness of epoxy acrylate resin.
Conclusions:
- Novel FHBPUA demonstrates excellent flexibility and UV-curability.
- FHBPUA effectively improves mechanical properties (tensile strength, elongation at break) of epoxy acrylate resins.
- FHBPUA is suitable for flexible freestanding films and as an additive in coatings, inks, and 3D printing applications.
