    Sodium cromoglycate did not reduce allergic reactions in humans or guinea pigs. This study found no significant effect of sodium cromoglycate on delayed hypersensitivity or irritant responses.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of sodium cromoglycate in mitigating allergic and irritant skin reactions.
    • To assess the effect of sodium cromoglycate on dinitrochlorobenzene-induced hypersensitivity in guinea pigs and human subjects.

    Main Methods:

    • Topical application of sodium cromoglycate to the forearm of 9 human subjects with known delayed hypersensitivity.
    • Application of sodium cromoglycate to the back of 14 dinitrochlorobenzene-sensitized guinea pigs prior to allergen and sodium lauryl sulphate challenge.
    • Assessment of allergic and toxic-irritant reaction intensity.

    Main Results:

    • Sodium cromoglycate did not significantly decrease the intensity of allergic reactions in human subjects.
    • Sodium cromoglycate failed to reduce the intensity of toxic-irritant reactions induced by sodium lauryl sulphate in humans.
    • In guinea pigs, sodium cromoglycate did not attenuate the allergic reactions to dinitrochlorobenzene or irritant reactions to sodium lauryl sulphate.

    Conclusions:

    • Topical sodium cromoglycate is ineffective in preventing or reducing delayed hypersensitivity reactions in humans.
    • Sodium cromoglycate does not inhibit toxic-irritant skin responses in humans or allergic/irritant responses in sensitized guinea pigs.
