The American Nurses Association (ANA) created and implemented the first nationally accepted Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements. The Code of Ethics is a living document regularly updated by the ANA and establishes an ethical standard that is non-negotiable for nurses in all roles and settings.
The Code of Ethics provisions outline the nurse's duty to the patient, the healthcare team, the profession, and society. The Code's fundamental principles include advocacy,...

Area of Science:

  • Health Professions Education
  • Bioethics
  • Interprofessional Education

Background:

  • Ethics education is a cornerstone for healthcare professional development.
  • This study evaluated an interprofessional approach to ethics education for students at an academic health science center.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare student perceptions of ethics education pre- and post-implementation of a campus-wide program.
  • To assess changes in student ethical decision-making skills following the program's implementation.

Main Methods:

  • A quasi-experimental design was employed, using graduating seniors from prior to the intervention as the control group.
  • The study involved 976 graduating students from a comprehensive health science center in the southwestern United States.
  • Ethical considerations included IRB approval, voluntary and confidential student participation in surveys.

Main Results:

  • Student perception of the adequacy of ethics content time decreased, but overall comfort with ethical issues increased.
  • Ethical decision-making skills scores were higher at both third- and fifth-year evaluations across all indicators.
  • Despite improvements, students' ethical decision-making scores did not reach the proficiency level defined by the Health Professional Ethics Rubric.

Conclusions:

  • The interprofessional campus-wide ethics initiative positively impacted students' ethical decision-making skills.
  • Further examination is required to determine the effectiveness of individual components of the ethics education intervention.
  • Continued refinement of healthcare ethics education is necessary to achieve desired proficiency levels.
