Mexican physicians-in-training exhibit negative stereotypes about aging, potentially impacting cancer care. Educational programs are needed to address ageism in oncology, particularly in Ibero-America.
Area of Science:
- Geriatric Medicine
- Oncology
- Medical Education
Background:
- Ageism, negative stereotypes of older adults, may contribute to undertreatment in cancer care.
- Prevalence of ageism among physicians in Ibero-America, especially those treating cancer patients, is largely unknown.
- This study investigated aging stereotypes among Mexican physicians-in-training.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the prevalence and nature of ageism among physicians-in-training in Mexico.
- To explore perceptions of aging in the context of oncology and geriatrics.
- To inform the development of educational interventions to combat ageism in medical professionals.
Main Methods:
- A survey, the "Negative Attributes and Positive Potential in Old Age" (NAO) scale, was administered to physicians-in-training at an oncology meeting.
- The survey assessed positive characteristics of aging (PPOA) and negative characteristics (NAOA) using 4-point scales.
- Participants also provided five descriptive words for older adults and young individuals, which were rated and visualized in word clouds.
Main Results:
- One hundred physicians-in-training participated; mean PPOA score was 2.9 and mean NAOA score was 2.1.
- Women and trainees in geriatrics/oncology programs reported more positive perceptions of aging.
- Descriptive words for older adults were rated negatively (median -2) compared to young individuals (median +3), with "frail" being the most common descriptor for older adults.
Conclusions:
- Mexican physicians-in-training demonstrated predominantly negative perceptions of aging.
- The use of negative descriptors highlights significant ageism within this group.
- Educational initiatives are crucial to reduce ageism among oncology trainees throughout Ibero-America.
