The Scope of Physics01:17

The Scope of Physics

52.7K
Physics is concerned with the interactions of energy, matter, space, and time, in order to discover the underlying mechanisms that underpin all phenomena. The word "physics" comes from the Greek word "phúsis", which means nature. Physics seeks to comprehend the natural world around us at its most fundamental level. It emphasizes the use of quantitative laws to do this, which could be valuable in other fields that want to push the performance boundaries of present...

Solving Problems in Physics02:32

Solving Problems in Physics

8.5K
Problem-solving is the ability to apply general physical principles to specific situations, usually expressed by equations. It is an essential skill in physics, and can also be useful for applying physics in everyday life as well. Analytical skills and problem-solving abilities can be applied to new situations, compared to a list of facts, which can never be extensive enough to include every possible circumstance. To solve physics problems, a certain amount of creativity and insight is...

Physical Pendulum01:06

Physical Pendulum

2.7K
When a rigid body is hanging freely from a fixed pivot point and is displaced, it oscillates similar to a simple pendulum and is known as a physical pendulum. The period and angular frequency of a physical pendulum are obtained by using the small-angle approximation and drawing parallels with a spring-mass system. The small-angle approximation (sinθ=θ) is valid up to about 14°.
When dealing with complicated systems, the mass moment of inertia is an important parameter, as it...

Physical Properties Affecting Solubility02:19

Physical Properties Affecting Solubility

Solutions of Gases in Liquids
As for any solution, the solubility of a gas in a liquid is affected by the attractive intermolecular forces between solute and solvent species. Unlike solid and liquid solutes, however, there is no solute-solute intermolecular attraction to overcome when a gaseous solute dissolves in a liquid solvent since the atoms or molecules comprising a gas are far separated and experience negligible interactions. Consequently, solute-solvent interactions are the sole...

Physical Properties of Alkanes02:33

Physical Properties of Alkanes

14.4K
Alkanes are nonpolar molecules due to the presence of only carbon and hydrogen atoms. The electronegativity difference between carbon and hydrogen is minimal, and hence alkanes have a zero dipole moment. This leads to the presence of only dispersion forces between the molecules. The strength of dispersion forces is dependent on the surface area of the molecules on which they act. Since the surface area increases with the molecular length for straight-chain alkanes, the dispersion forces also...

Summary

Midurethral sling surgery for stress urinary incontinence modestly improved leisure physical activity and significantly enhanced physical functioning in women long-term. These positive changes were observed 60 months or more after the procedure.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Gynecology
  • Rehabilitation Medicine

Background:

  • Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) significantly impacts women's quality of life.
  • Midurethral sling procedures are a common surgical treatment for SUI.
  • Long-term effects of SUI surgery on lifestyle factors like physical activity are crucial to understand.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate long-term changes in leisure physical activity (PA) levels.
  • To assess long-term changes in physical functioning (PF) after midurethral sling surgery for SUI.
  • To correlate SUI treatment outcomes with patient lifestyle and physical capabilities.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective cohort study with long-term follow-up (5.8-8 years).
  • Utilized International Physical Activity Questionnaire for PA assessment (sedentary, insufficient, sufficient levels).
  • Employed NIH Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System for PF assessment.

Main Results:

  • Leisure PA levels improved post-surgery, with a decrease in sedentary behavior (31.3% to 21.9%) and an increase in sufficient PA (56.3% to 65.6%).
  • Significant long-term improvement in physical functioning was observed (mean score increase from 44.95 to 53.18).
  • Urinary symptom scores also showed significant improvement at long-term follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • Midurethral sling procedures demonstrate sustained positive effects on women's physical activity and functioning.
  • The surgery is associated with modest gains in leisure PA and significant improvements in PF.
  • These findings support the long-term benefits of midurethral slings beyond symptom control.
