Background:

  • Emollients and moisturisers play a crucial role in AD treatment by improving skin barrier function.
  • Evaluating patient acceptability and efficacy of new emollient formulations is essential for clinical practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To outline the methodology for assessing patient acceptability and efficacy of an ectoin-containing emollient in atopic dermatitis.
  • To compare the performance of the ectoin-containing emollient with previously studied emollients.

Main Methods:

  • A study involving 30 patients with moderate to severe AD using an ectoin-containing emollient (Emollient W) for four weeks.
  • Assessment of disease severity using objective SCORAD, POEM, and PADQLQ scores.
  • Comparison of results with historical data from other proprietary emollients (Restoradom®, Ezerra®, Ezerra plus®).

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements were observed in objective SCORAD (p=0.002), POEM (p=0.035), and PADQLQ scores (p=0.017) after four weeks of treatment.
  • Transepidermal water loss also showed significant improvement (p=0.035).
  • Patient acceptability was rated as "very good" or "good" by 63% of subjects; efficacy and acceptability were similar to other emollients.

  • An ectoin-containing emollient demonstrates improvements in disease severity and quality of life within four weeks.
  • Efficacy and patient acceptability of this ectoin-containing emollient are comparable to other proprietary emollients.
