Area of Science:
- Phytochemistry
- Natural Product Chemistry
- Pharmacognosy
Background:
- Wikstroemia chamaedaphne is a plant species with potential medicinal properties.
- Phenolic compounds are known for their diverse biological activities.
- Understanding the chemical constituents of medicinal plants is crucial for drug discovery.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and identify phenolic compounds from Wikstroemia chamaedaphne.
- To report novel occurrences of these compounds in the plant and genus.
Main Methods:
- Column chromatography (silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, ODS) and preparative High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).
- Structure elucidation using physico-chemical properties and spectral analyses (e.g., NMR, MS).
Main Results:
- Thirteen phenolic compounds were isolated: five flavonoids (1-5) and eight lignans (6-13).
- Compounds 1, 3, 5-8, 10, 11, and 13 were reported for the first time in W. chamaedaphne.
- Compounds 1, 5, 7, 10, and 13 were reported for the first time in the Wikstroemia genus.
Conclusions:
- The phenolic profile of Wikstroemia chamaedaphne includes several known flavonoids and lignans.
- This research expands the phytochemical knowledge of the Wikstroemia genus.
- The newly identified compounds may contribute to the ethnobotanical uses of W. chamaedaphne.

Structure and Nomenclature of Alcohols and Phenols
Alcohols are one of the most important functional groups in organic chemistry. The name of alcohol comes from the hydrocarbon from which it is derived. Alcohols are organic molecules containing the functional hydroxyl or –OH group directly bonded to carbon. Phenols have an OH group directly attached to a benzene ring. While alcohols are colorless, phenol is a white crystalline compound with a characteristic "hospital smell" odor.
As with other organic compounds, alcohols and...
