Background:

  • Workplace aggression against healthcare personnel is a pervasive and underreported issue.
  • Such incidents contribute to increased work-related stress, absenteeism, and negatively impact patient care quality and healthcare economics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of violence experienced by medical professionals associated with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Rome.
  • To investigate the correlation between workplace violence and various socio-demographic factors among these professionals.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study design was employed.
  • An online questionnaire comprising 30 questions on demographics, work details, and aggression experiences was administered.
  • Statistical analyses included descriptive, univariate, bivariate, and multivariate methods.

Main Results:

  • Out of 956 respondents, 66.5% reported experiencing at least one act of aggression during their careers.
  • Female healthcare workers reported higher rates of aggression, particularly verbal (OR 1.53).
  • Full-time employees (OR 2.1), and those in National Health System territorial structures (OR 2.08), emergency services (OR 3.39), and social security institutions (OR 9.58) faced increased risk. Age was a protective factor (OR 0.97).

Conclusions:

  • Workplace aggression is a significant concern within the medical profession.
  • Enhanced staff training and heightened awareness are crucial for addressing and mitigating this phenomenon.
