  • Early detection of glaucoma, particularly preperimetric glaucoma (PPG) and open-angle glaucoma (OAG), is crucial for preserving vision.
  • Current diagnostic methods may benefit from supplementary tests to improve sensitivity and specificity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical significance of color visual acuity (CVA) in individuals with preperimetric glaucoma (PPG) and open-angle glaucoma (OAG).
  • To determine if CVA can serve as an effective biomarker for glaucoma detection and severity assessment.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 123 eyes from 73 subjects, including normal controls, PPG, and OAG groups, was analyzed.
  • Color visual acuity was assessed using a novel test evaluating red, green-yellow, blue-green, and blue-purple spectrums.
  • Clinical background factors, visual acuity, and mean deviation (MD) were recorded and analyzed.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in age, sex, intraocular pressure, or spherical equivalent were found between the groups.
  • Red and blue-green visual acuity were significantly diminished in OAG eyes compared to normal eyes (P=0.008 and P=0.015, respectively).
  • Red and blue-green visual acuity showed a significant negative correlation with mean deviation in PPG and OAG eyes (r=-0.23, P=0.023; r=-0.25, P=0.012, respectively).

Conclusions:

  • Reduced red and blue-green visual acuity are detectable in OAG eyes and correlate with the extent of visual field loss.
  • The novel CVA test shows promise as a supplementary tool for early glaucoma detection and monitoring disease severity.
  • CVA assessment may enhance current glaucoma diagnostic and management strategies.
