Treatment for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Oxygen Therapy for Respiratory Failure01:16

Treatment for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension: Oxygen Therapy for Respiratory Failure

603
Oxygen therapy has emerged as a significant tool in enhancing the quality of life for patients suffering from pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). While this therapy has principally been studied on patients with significant hypoxemia, this therapeutic approach helps prevent potential organ damage and can be administered in the comfort of one's home.
Oxygen therapy is vital in increasing and maintaining blood oxygen levels in PAH patients. As a result, it aids in reducing fatigue,...

Student t Distribution01:31

Student t Distribution

13.6K
The population standard deviation is rarely known in many day-to-day examples of statistics. When the sample sizes are large, it is easy to estimate the population standard deviation using a confidence interval, which provides results close enough to the original value. However, statisticians ran into problems when the sample size was small. A small sample size caused inaccuracies in the confidence interval.
The Student t distribution was developed by William S. Goset (1876–1937) of the...

Microsoft Excel: Student's t-Test

1.6K
Student's t-test in Microsoft Excel is a statistical method used to compare the means of two groups to determine if they are significantly different from each other. It's commonly used to evaluate hypotheses, such as testing whether a treatment has an effect compared to a control group. Excel provides built-in functions to perform t-tests, making it accessible for users needing to conduct basic statistical analysis.
To conduct a t-test in Excel, use the T.TEST function or the "Data...

Comparing Experimental Results: Student's t-Test

5.3K
The t-test is a statistical method used to compare the sample mean with a population mean or compare two means from two data sets. The test statistic is calculated from the standard deviation, mean, and number of measurements in the data set at a selected confidence interval and then compared to a table of critical values at this confidence level. If the test statistic is smaller than the critical value, the null hypothesis is accepted. In this case, we state that the difference between the...

Anatomy of Respiratory System II: Lower Respiratory Tract01:31

Anatomy of Respiratory System II: Lower Respiratory Tract

3.5K
The lower respiratory tract is anatomically composed of several vital structures, including the larynx, trachea, bronchial tree, alveoli, lungs, and pleurae. Each component has a specific function, and all are intricately connected to ensure efficient respiration.
The Larynx
It is located between the pharynx and the trachea, acts as a passageway for air, and hosts several critical structures, such as the epiglottis, vocal cords, and glottis. The epiglottis acts as a gateway, guiding food to the...

The Respiratory System01:16

The Respiratory System

89.2K
The respiratory system is comprised of the organs that enable breathing. Air enters the nostrils and mouth, followed by the pharynx (throat) and larynx (voice box), which lead to the trachea (windpipe). In the thoracic cavity, the trachea splits into two bronchi that allow air to enter the lungs. The bronchi split into progressively smaller bronchioles and terminate in small groups of tiny sacs in the lungs called alveoli, where gas exchange occurs.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Respiratory Therapy Training
  • Simulation-Based Learning

Background:

  • Ensuring student respiratory therapists (SRTs) master pediatric skills is a challenge.
  • Simulation supplements clinical experience, but its replacement potential is unclear.
  • SickKids developed an alternative pediatric rotation with increased simulation time.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a simulation-heavy pediatric rotation for SRTs.
  • To compare student performance in simulated settings between clinical and simulation-based rotations.
  • To assess cognitive load, self-appraisal, and self-efficacy in both groups.

Main Methods:

  • An alternative pediatric rotation was created with a higher percentage of simulation time.
  • Student performance, cognitive load, self-appraisal, and self-efficacy were measured.
  • 59 students enrolled, 54 completed post-rotation testing.

Main Results:

  • Data analysis is ongoing; results will be published.
  • Initial enrollment and completion numbers are reported.
  • Geographical factors complicated follow-up retention testing.

Conclusions:

  • The study hypothesizes comparable performance between simulation-based and traditional clinical rotations.
  • Findings will inform the role of simulation in respiratory therapy education.
  • Publication of results is pending data analysis.
