Summary

  • Static stretching (SS) is often reported to interfere with muscular strength performance.
  • This interference might be influenced by participant or researcher expectations regarding SS effects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if manipulating participants' expectations about static stretching influences strength-endurance performance.
  • To examine the impact of expectancy on force production during unilateral knee extension.

Main Methods:

  • Eighteen strength-trained men were divided into positively biased (PB) and negatively biased (NB) groups.
  • Participants underwent strength-endurance tests (unilateral knee extension) under two conditions: control (no stretching) and static stretching (SS).
  • Performance was measured by total repetitions and total exercise volume across 4 sets to failure at 70% of 1RM.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in total repetitions or total exercise volume were found between control and SS conditions, regardless of group bias.
  • The positively biased (PB) group showed significantly more repetitions in the final set during the SS condition compared to the control condition.
  • Expectancy did not influence overall strength-endurance volume but showed a specific effect on late-stage performance.

Conclusions:

  • While overall strength-endurance volume was unaffected by expectancy, positive expectations regarding static stretching may enhance performance in the final stages of an exercise bout.
  • Expectancy appears to be a confounding factor that may have influenced strength-endurance outcomes in previous research on static stretching.
