Background:

  • Neck circumference (NC) is recognized as a marker for metabolic abnormalities, independent of other obesity measures.
  • Limited data exist on the relationship between NC and serum uric acid (UA) concentrations.
  • This study investigates the association between NC and UA levels within a large community-based cohort.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the cross-sectional association between NC and serum UA concentration.
  • To determine the relationship between NC and the odds of hyperuricemia.
  • To analyze these associations in a diverse adult population.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from 87,782 participants (16,317 women, 71,465 men) from the Kailuan Study.
  • Employed generalized linear and logistic regression models to assess NC's association with UA concentration and hyperuricemia risk.
  • Adjusted for numerous demographic, anthropometric, clinical, and lifestyle factors.

Main Results:

  • Higher NC correlated significantly with elevated serum UA concentrations in both sexes (p < 0.001).
  • Increased NC was associated with higher odds of hyperuricemia, with a notable interaction between sexes (p=0.01).
  • Each 5-cm NC increase raised hyperuricemia likelihood by 6% in men and 17% in women.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated neck circumference is a significant predictor of higher serum uric acid levels.
  • Higher NC is associated with an increased risk of developing hyperuricemia in the Chinese adult population.
  • NC serves as a valuable, easily measurable indicator for metabolic risk assessment.
