Extensive intratumoral calcification is uncommon in pineal region germinoma. This case highlights a 13-year-old male with germinoma showing significant calcification, necessitating histologic confirmation for diagnosis.
Area of Science:
- Neuro-oncology
- Pediatric oncology
- Diagnostic imaging
Background:
- Intratumoral calcification is typically associated with pineal parenchymal tumors, not germinomas.
- Germinomas are the most common type of pineal region tumor in children and young adults.
Observation:
- A 13-year-old male presented with symptoms including headache, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting.
- Radiologic imaging revealed a multilobular pineal region mass with internal calcifications.
Findings:
- Histopathological examination confirmed a pure germinoma.
- The germinoma exhibited unusually extensive intratumoral calcification, a rare feature.
Implications:
- While imaging can suggest a diagnosis, no specific pattern is pathognomonic for pineal region masses.
- Histologic verification remains essential for accurate diagnosis of pineal region tumors, especially those with atypical imaging features.
