Scanning sequences impact the accuracy of intraoral digital models in the palate. Initiating scans at the palatal side of posterior teeth improves palatal trueness, crucial for dental applications.
Area of Science:
- Dental technology
- Digital dentistry
- Oral scanning
Background:
- Limited studies exist on the accuracy of intraoral digital models specifically in the palatal region.
- Investigating palatal trueness is essential for reliable digital dental workflows.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the influence of different scanning sequences on the trueness of intraoral digital models in the palate.
- To analyze the deviation and distribution characteristics of palatal trueness.
Main Methods:
- 35 participants underwent three procedures for upper digital model acquisition.
- Direct digital models were captured using TRIOS 3 POD scanners with varied palatal scanning sequences (Groups Tr1 and Tr2).
- A modified superimposition method assessed 3D trueness in the palate and palatal vault region (PVR), analyzing absolute and signed deviations.
Main Results:
- Group Tr2 (108.25 ± 33.83 μm) showed slightly better palatal trueness than Group Tr1 (118.59 ± 37.67 μm) (p=0.012).
- No significant differences in trueness were found for the palatal vault region (PVR) or shape distortion between groups.
- A consistent pattern of palatal trueness was observed in most participants (22/35).
Conclusions:
- The sequence of intraoral scanning significantly affects palatal trueness.
- Optimal palatal scanning involves initiating the scan at the palatal side of posterior teeth.
- Adjustments to the superimposition region are recommended for accurate 3D PVR analysis.

Mean Absolute Deviation
Let us consider a dataset containing the number of unsold cupcakes in five shops: 10, 15, 8, 7, and 10. Initially, calculate the sample mean. Then calculate the deviation, or the difference, between each data value and the mean. Next, the absolute values of these deviations are added and divided by the sample size to...

Calculating Standard Deviation
The standard deviation value is small when all the data is concentrated close to the mean. Here the data exhibits low variation. The standard deviation value is larger when the data values are more spread out from the mean. Here, the data displays high...
