Background:

Experiential avoidance (EA) involves active strategies to disengage from private experiences.
EA is implicated in the development and maintenance of nonepileptic attack disorder (NEAD).

Purpose of the Study:

To understand the role of avoidance in NEAD.
To evaluate experiential avoidance as a contributory factor in NEAD.

Main Methods:

A narrative synthesis of 14 articles identified from CINAHL, MEDLINE Complete, PsycINFO, and EMBASE.
Two meta-analyses were conducted: NEAD vs. healthy controls (HC) and NEAD vs. epilepsy comparisons (EC) regarding EA levels.

Main Results:

Experiential avoidance is a strategy used by a significant proportion of individuals with NEAD.
Individuals with NEAD demonstrated significantly higher levels of EA compared to both HC and EC groups.

Conclusions:

Experiential avoidance is prevalent in NEAD.
Further research is necessary to elucidate the specific types and extent of avoidance relevant to NEAD.
