Rise of Liquid in a Capillary Tube01:18

Rise of Liquid in a Capillary Tube

3.2K
When very thin cylindrical tubes, called capillaries, are dipped in a liquid, the liquid rises or falls in the tube compared to the surrounding liquid. This phenomenon is called capillary action. Capillary action occurs due to the combination of two opposing forces: the cohesive forces of the liquid, which cause it to stick to itself and form a rounded shape, and the adhesive forces between the liquid and the walls of the container, which cause the liquid to be attracted to the container walls.

Lung Capacity01:47

Lung Capacity

56.2K
The air in the lungs is measured in volumes and capacities. Lung volume measures reflect the amount of air taken in, released, or left over after a lung function, like a single inhalation. Lung capacity measures are sums of two or more lung volume measures.

Multiple Regression

3.8K
Multiple regression assesses a linear relationship between one response or dependent variable and two or more independent variables. It has many practical applications.
Farmers can use multiple regression to determine the crop yield based on more than one factor, such as water availability, fertilizer, soil properties, etc. Here, the crop yield is the response or dependent variable as it depends on the other independent variables. The analysis requires the construction of a scatter plot...

Deformation of Member under Multiple Loadings01:11

Deformation of Member under Multiple Loadings

457
When a rod is made of different materials or has various cross-sections, it must be divided into parts that meet the necessary conditions for determining the deformation. These parts are each characterized by their internal force, cross-sectional area, length, and modulus of elasticity. These parameters are then used to compute the deformation of the entire rod.
In the case of a member with a variable cross-section, the strain is not constant but depends on the position. The deformation of an...

Multiple Voltage Sources01:25

Multiple Voltage Sources

1.7K
Generally, a single battery is not enough to power some devices. In such cases, batteries can be combined in two ways: in series or in parallel.
In series, the positive terminal of one battery is connected to the negative terminal of another battery. Hence, the voltage of each battery is added to give the net voltage, which is increased because each battery boosts the electrons that enter it. The same current flows through each battery because they are connected in series.
Batteries are...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pulmonology
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Increasing incidence of multiple primary lung cancers (MPLCs) due to advanced imaging and screening programs.
  • Established diagnostic criteria exist but differentiating MPLCs from recurrence or metastasis remains a clinical challenge.
  • Need for uniform guidelines due to diagnostic ambiguity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review current understanding and challenges in diagnosing and managing multiple primary lung cancers (MPLCs).
  • To highlight the role of molecular and genomic methods in characterizing MPLCs.
  • To discuss current therapeutic strategies and special considerations for specific MPLC presentations like multiple ground-glass opacities (GGOs).

Main Methods:

  • Review of established diagnostic criteria for MPLCs from major lung cancer research institutes.
  • Exploration of molecular and genomic techniques for lesion characterization.
  • Analysis of treatment modalities including surgical resection and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).

Main Results:

  • Diagnostic criteria for MPLCs are established but differentiation from other lesions is often ambiguous.
  • Molecular and genomic methods offer potential for improved lesion relationship definition and targeted therapy.
  • Surgical resection is the primary treatment, with SBRT as an alternative for non-surgical candidates.
  • Multiple ground-glass opacities (GGOs) represent a unique MPLC subtype requiring specific clinical attention.

Conclusions:

  • Accurate diagnosis and differentiation of MPLCs are crucial for effective management.
  • Personalized treatment strategies, considering tumor characteristics and patient status, are essential.
  • Emerging technologies and careful clinical attention to unique presentations like multiple GGOs are vital for improving outcomes in MPLC patients.
