Long-term Depression01:05

Long-term Depression

33.2K
Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Purposive Learning

E. C. Tolman emphasized the purposiveness of behavior — the idea that much of our behavior is goal-directed. For instance, employees who aim for a promotion work diligently to meet their targets. Tolman argued that when classical conditioning and operant conditioning occur, the organism acquires certain expectations. In classical conditioning, a child might fear a dog because they expect it to bite. In operant conditioning, a person might consistently work overtime because they expect a...

Freezing Point Depression and Boiling Point Elevation

Boiling Point Elevation
The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which its vapor pressure is equal to ambient atmospheric pressure. Since the vapor pressure of a solution is lowered due to the presence of nonvolatile solutes, it stands to reason that the solution’s boiling point will subsequently be increased. Vapor pressure increases with temperature, and so a solution will require a higher temperature than will pure solvent to achieve any given vapor pressure, including one...

Depressants01:28

Depressants

389
Depressant drugs, including alcohol and sedative-hypnotics, diminish central nervous system activity by enhancing the action of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that reduces brain activity and promotes relaxation. These substances can have various therapeutic uses but also pose significant risks, especially when misused or combined.
Alcohol is a common depressant that can induce a sense of relaxation and reduced inhibition at low doses. Contrary to its occasional...

Area of Science:

  • Medical technology
  • Artificial intelligence in healthcare
  • Mental health diagnostics

Background:

  • Machine learning (ML) offers potential for enhanced accuracy and precision in medical diagnostics.
  • ML-driven technology shows promise in detecting and improving treatment for complex mental disorders like depression.
  • Current depression diagnosis can be subjective and labor-intensive, requiring human intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a framework for detecting depression with minimal human intervention using artificial intelligence.
  • To introduce the artificial intelligence mental evaluation (AiME) framework for depression detection.
  • To assess the performance of AiME in predicting depression.

Main Methods:

  • Developed the artificial intelligence mental evaluation (AiME) framework.
  • Utilized deep learning, a subset of artificial intelligence, within the AiME framework.
  • Implemented a short, human-computer interactive evaluation for data collection.

Main Results:

  • The AiME framework demonstrated satisfactory performance in predicting depression.
  • The system can identify depressed participants with minimal human intervention.
  • AiME provides a more objective evaluation compared to traditional methods.

Conclusions:

  • AiME offers a viable tool for mental health professionals to identify depression symptoms.
  • The ease of use of AiME enables faster preventative interventions for depression.
  • AiME can alleviate challenges in observing nuanced physiological and behavioral biomarkers of depression.
