Summary

Retinal tissue perfusion is significantly impaired in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, showing a 42% decrease. This finding suggests retinal perfusion could serve as a biomarker for monitoring MS progression.

Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic demyelinating disease affecting the central nervous system.
  • Retinal neurodegeneration and vascular changes are increasingly recognized in MS.
  • Assessing retinal tissue perfusion (RTP) may offer insights into MS pathophysiology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether retinal tissue perfusion (RTP) is impaired in patients diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • To evaluate the potential of RTP as a biomarker for monitoring MS disease progression.

Main Methods:

  • Seventy-four patients with MS (66 relapsing-remitting MS, 8 clinically isolated syndrome) and 74 healthy controls were enrolled.
  • Retinal blood flow was measured using a retinal function imager.
  • Inner retinal tissue volume was quantified using ultrahigh-resolution optical coherence tomography.

Main Results:

  • Patients with MS exhibited significantly lower RTP (2.37 ± 0.59 nl/s/mm³) compared to controls (4.06 ± 0.89 nl/s/mm³), a 42% reduction (P < .001).
  • Retinal blood flow volume was 45% lower in the MS group (2.50 ± 0.50 nl/s) versus controls (4.56 ± 0.91 nl/s) (P < .001).
  • Inner retinal tissue volume was also significantly reduced in MS patients (P < .05).

Conclusions:

  • Retinal tissue perfusion is demonstrably impaired in individuals with multiple sclerosis.
  • The observed reduction in RTP suggests its potential utility as a non-invasive biomarker for tracking MS progression and disease activity.
