    Summary

    Human B cells expressing the Leu-1 (CD5) marker are key producers of immunoglobulin M rheumatoid factor. This B cell subset is present from infancy to adulthood and is implicated in autoimmune conditions.

    Background:

    • Rheumatoid factor (RF) is an autoantibody associated with autoimmune diseases.
    • A specific human B cell subpopulation, identified by Leu-1 (CD5) expression, is investigated for its role in RF production.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To identify the B cell subpopulation responsible for immunoglobulin M rheumatoid factor (IgM-RF) secretion.
    • To investigate the developmental and functional characteristics of Leu-1+ B cells in RF production.

    Main Methods:

    • Stimulation of human B cells (from cord blood and adult peripheral blood) with Staphylococcus aureus.
    • Quantification of IgM-RF secretion from Leu-1+ (CD5+) B cells.
