Sweet potato vine silage (SPVS) supplementation improved the digestibility and nitrogen retention of poor-quality roughage diets for heifers. SPVS also reduced methane emissions, offering a sustainable feed option for tropical regions.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effects of SPVS and UMB supplementation on the nutritional utilization and methane emissions of heifers fed a basal roughage diet.

Main Methods:

  • Six heifers were assigned to three diets: roughage (R), R + SPVS, and R + UMB.
  • Measurements included feed intake, nutrient digestibility, digesta passage, microbial protein synthesis, and methane emissions over two experimental periods.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in dry matter (DM) and nitrogen (N) intake were observed across diets.
  • Apparent DM digestibility and N retention were significantly higher in the R + SPVS group compared to the R group.
  • Methane emissions per unit of digested feed were significantly lower for R + SPVS compared to R.

Conclusions:

  • SPVS supplementation enhances the digestibility and N retention of poor-quality roughage diets for cattle.
  • Supplementing with SPVS offers a viable strategy to mitigate methane emissions in ruminants fed low-quality forages.
