Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To test if prior cycling can prevent acute endothelial dysfunction following resistance exercise.
  • To investigate the temporal effects of combined exercise on vascular function.

Main Methods:

  • Twelve healthy subjects underwent two randomized trials: resistance exercise only (RE) and 45 minutes of cycling followed by resistance exercise (C+RE).
  • Brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) was measured at baseline and at 10, 30, and 60 minutes post-resistance exercise.
  • Subjects rested for 45 minutes before exercise in the RE trial and cycled for 45 minutes in the C+RE trial.

Main Results:

  • Both RE and C+RE trials resulted in impaired FMD post-exercise.
  • No significant difference in FMD response was observed between the two trials.
  • Endothelial dysfunction was statistically significant at 30 and 60 minutes post-resistance exercise in the RE trial.

Conclusions:

  • Forty-five minutes of prior cycling was insufficient to prevent acute endothelial dysfunction after resistance exercise.
  • Resistance exercise alone, or preceded by cycling, impairs endothelial function in healthy young individuals.
