A novel diazotrophic bacterium, Mesorhizobium composti sp. nov. strain CC-YTH430T, was identified from Taiwanese compost. This nitrogen-fixing bacterium exhibits distinct phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, expanding the Mesorhizobium genus.
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Bacteriology
- Taxonomy
Background:
- Diazotrophic bacteria play crucial roles in nitrogen cycling.
- The Mesorhizobium genus comprises important plant-associated bacteria.
- Novel bacterial species discovery is vital for understanding microbial diversity and function.
Purpose of the Study:
- To taxonomically characterize a novel diazotrophic bacterium isolated from compost.
- To determine the phylogenetic and phenotypic properties of strain CC-YTH430T.
- To propose a new species within the Mesorhizobium genus.
Main Methods:
- Polyphasic taxonomic approach including 16S rRNA gene sequencing.
- Phenotypic characterization (Gram staining, growth conditions, colony morphology).
- Chemotaxonomic analyses (fatty acid profiles, polar lipids, DNA G+C content).
Main Results:
- Strain CC-YTH430T is a Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic rod with yellow colonies.
- It tolerates a temperature range of 15-40°C, pH 5.0-9.0, and 0-2% NaCl.
- High 16S rRNA gene similarities to Mesorhizobium species were observed, but distinct average nucleotide identity values supported novelty.
- Demonstrated N2-fixing activity (0.2 nmol ethylene h-1).
Conclusions:
- Strain CC-YTH430T represents a novel species, Mesorhizobium composti sp. nov.
- The polyphasic approach confirmed its unique taxonomic position.
- This finding contributes to the knowledge of Mesorhizobium diversity and their ecological roles.

Cyclic Processes And Isolated Systems
In the case of a non-isolated system, the change in the internal energy is zero only if the process is cyclic. A thermodynamic process is considered cyclic if the system undergoes a series of changes and returns to its initial state.
Consider a cyclic process that returns to its initial state, undergoing a four-step process. The heat transfer along each...
