The SCARF workshop significantly improved suicide literacy and confidence in rural Australians. Mental well-being also saw lasting improvements, offering a valuable suicide prevention tool for farming communities.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Mental Health Research
- Suicidology
Background:
- Rural Australian communities face a higher risk of suicide.
- Existing suicide prevention programs may not adequately address the unique needs of these populations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effectiveness of the SCARF (Suspect, Connect, Ask, Refer, Follow-Up) workshop.
- To assess improvements in well-being and suicide prevention knowledge among Australian farming and rural communities.
Main Methods:
- The SCARF program was delivered to 14 groups of farmers and agricultural workers.
- Participants completed validated scales measuring suicide literacy, stigma, confidence, and mental well-being pre-workshop, post-workshop, and at 3-month follow-up.
- Linear mixed-effects regression was used for data analysis.
Main Results:
- Significant increases in suicide literacy and confidence to assist others were observed immediately post-workshop and maintained at 3-month follow-up.
- Mental well-being significantly improved by the 3-month follow-up point.
- 127 out of 255 participants completed the 3-month follow-up.
Conclusions:
- The SCARF program is a brief, culturally specific intervention tailored for Australian rural and farming communities.
- The workshop effectively enhances suicide literacy, confidence in responding to suicidality, and overall mental well-being.
- SCARF represents a valuable resource for suicide prevention in high-risk rural populations.
