  • Neuregulin 4 (Nrg4) is an EGF-family ligand involved in preventing obesity and insulin resistance.
  • Thyroid hormone (TH) significantly impacts whole-body energy metabolism.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate circulating neuregulin 4 (Nrg4) levels in hyperthyroid patients.
  • To explore the relationship between thyroid hormone (TH) and Nrg4 expression.

Main Methods:

  • Serum Nrg4 levels were measured in 129 hyperthyroid patients and 100 controls using ELISA.
  • Nrg4 expression was analyzed in mice treated with T3 and in cell cultures.

Main Results:

  • Hyperthyroid patients exhibited significantly higher serum Nrg4 levels compared to controls.
  • Nrg4 levels decreased significantly after treatment to achieve euthyroidism.
  • T3 treatment upregulated Nrg4 expression in mouse liver and white adipose tissue.

Conclusions:

  • Serum Nrg4 concentrations are elevated in hyperthyroidism.
  • Liver and white adipose tissue are likely primary contributors to increased serum Nrg4 in hyperthyroid individuals.
