  • Sensory processing impairments are common in neurodevelopmental disorders, notably autism, and linked to maladaptive behaviors.
  • Limited research exists on sensory processing difficulties in Down syndrome (DS) and their impact on behavior.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize sensory processing difficulties in children with Down syndrome (DS).
  • To determine the association between sensory processing difficulties and maladaptive behaviors in this population.

Main Methods:

  • The Short Sensory Profile and Developmental Behavior Checklist were administered to caregivers of 49 children with DS.
  • Participants had a mean nonverbal mental age of 30.92 months and mean chronological age of 67.04 months.

Main Results:

  • Children with DS showed significant difficulties in Low Energy/Weak, Under-responsive/Seeks Sensation, and Auditory Filtering.
  • Elevated maladaptive behaviors included Self-Absorbed and Disruptive/Antisocial behaviors.
  • Sensory seeking (Under-responsive/Seeks Sensation) was significantly associated with both Self-Absorbed and Disruptive/Antisocial behaviors.

Conclusions:

  • A distinct pattern of sensory processing impairments exists in children with Down syndrome.
  • These sensory challenges are associated with specific maladaptive behaviors, suggesting potential intervention targets.
