Area of Science:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Immunology
  • Surgical Inflammation

Background:

  • Surgical interventions and invasive procedures can trigger inflammatory responses.
  • Stimuli include surgical trauma and anesthetic agents.
  • This inflammatory response is a natural bodily defense mechanism.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Identify causal factors of perioperative immune reactions.
  • Present interventional options for managing inflammation.
  • Discuss the impact of perioperative inflammation on patient health.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted an extensive MEDLINE search.
  • Focused on perioperative and postoperative inflammatory response.
  • Included clinical and basic research.

Main Results:

  • Overshooting inflammatory responses can negatively impact surgical patients.
  • Anesthetic agents and surgical trauma modulate perioperative inflammation.
  • Supportive therapy can influence inflammatory processes.

Conclusions:

  • Perioperative inflammation has multifarious effects on patients.
  • Immunomodulatory effects of perioperative therapeutics and anesthetics are highlighted.
  • Knowledge aids informed decisions to improve patient outcomes.
