Small bowel metastasis from pulmonary rhabdomyosarcoma causing intussusception: a case report
1Clinical Medical College of Jiangsu University, Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Kunshan First People's Hospital affiliated to Jiangsu University, Jiangsu, Kunshan, 215300, China.
Primary pulmonary rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) rarely metastasizes to the small bowel, causing intussusception. This case highlights the importance of considering rare metastatic sites in adult soft tissue sarcoma.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Pathology
- Radiology
Background:
- Primary pulmonary rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is an exceedingly rare adult soft tissue sarcoma.
- Small bowel metastasis from RMS is uncommon, posing diagnostic challenges.
Observation:
- A 75-year-old man presented with dyspnea due to primary pulmonary pleomorphic RMS.
- He later developed jejunal intussusception, confirmed as RMS metastasis.
- Imaging included chest CT, PET/CT, and abdominal CT; biopsy confirmed RMS.
Findings:
- Immunohistochemistry confirmed pleomorphic RMS with positive desmin and MyoD1.
- Despite initial negative abdominal imaging, jejunal metastasis occurred 9 months post-treatment.
- Histology revealed RMS involving jejunal mucosa, submucosa, and muscularis.
Implications:
- Rhabdomyosarcoma is aggressive and prone to rapid metastatic progression.
- Small bowel metastasis, though rare, must be considered in RMS patients presenting with abdominal symptoms.
- This case underscores the need for vigilance regarding unusual metastatic patterns in soft tissue sarcomas.

Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition
The epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition or EMT is a developmental process commonly observed in wound healing, embryogenesis, and cancer metastasis. EMT is induced by transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) or receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) ligands, which further...

Inflammatory Bowel Disease II: Crohn's Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease, commonly known as IBD, refers to a collection of disorders that lead to persistent inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two types of IBD are ulcerative colitis, which impacts the colon, and Crohn's disease, which can involve any part of the gastrointestinal segment.
