Predicting Reaction Outcomes02:24

Predicting Reaction Outcomes

10.4K
Kinetics describes the rate and path by which a reaction occurs. In contrast, thermodynamics deals with state functions and describes the properties, behavior, and components of a system. It is not concerned with the path taken by the process and cannot address the rate at which a reaction occurs. Although it does provide information about what can happen during a reaction process, it does not describe the detailed steps of what appears on an atomic or a molecular level. On the other hand,...

Oppositional Defiant Disorder01:30

Oppositional Defiant Disorder

685
A persistent pattern of angry or irritable mood, defiant behavior, or vindictiveness characterizes Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Symptoms must occur over at least six months, involve interactions with individuals beyond siblings, and meet specific diagnostic criteria to be clinically significant. The disorder affects emotional regulation, social interactions, and behavior, often manifesting early in life and influencing long-term development and functioning.
Diagnostic Criteria and...

Diabetes: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Complications

2.1K
For most patients, experiencing several weeks of polyuria, polydipsia, fatigue, and significant weight loss may indicate the presence of diabetes. Furthermore, adults displaying the phenotypic appearance of type 2 diabetes (particularly those who are obese and not initially insulin-requiring), may have islet cell autoantibodies, suggesting autoimmune-mediated β cell destruction and a diagnosis of latent autoimmune diabetes of adults (LADA). The categorization of glucose homeostasis is...

Negative and Cognitive Symptoms of Schizophrenia01:30

Negative and Cognitive Symptoms of Schizophrenia

512
Negative symptoms of schizophrenia indicate a reduction or absence of typical behaviors and emotional responses found in healthy individuals, while positive symptoms reflect an excess or distortion of normal functioning.
Negative Symptoms
Negative symptoms of schizophrenia manifest as deficits in normal emotional and behavioral functioning, profoundly impacting daily life. Individuals with schizophrenia often display a flat affect, characterized by a near-total absence of emotional expression,...

Outcomes of Glycolysis01:13

Outcomes of Glycolysis

106.8K
Nearly all the energy used by cells comes from the bonds that make up complex organic compounds. These organic compounds are broken down into simpler molecules, such as glucose. As a result, cells extract energy from glucose over many chemical reactions—a process called cellular respiration.
Cellular respiration can occur aerobically (with oxygen) or anaerobically (without oxygen). In the presence of oxygen, cellular respiration starts with glycolysis and continues with pyruvate...

Summary

Children with more severe oppositional symptoms showed similar ADHD treatment improvements with parent management training (PMT). This suggests oppositionality severity predicts outcomes in ADHD therapy.

Area of Science:

  • Child Psychology
  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders
  • Behavioral Therapy

Background:

  • Parent management training (PMT) is a leading treatment for childhood Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
  • Individual responses to PMT vary, necessitating research into factors influencing treatment outcomes.
  • Comorbid oppositional symptoms are common in ADHD and may impact treatment effectiveness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether the severity of oppositional symptoms predicts treatment outcomes in children with ADHD.
  • To determine if higher baseline oppositionality correlates with greater improvement in ADHD symptoms following intervention.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 67 children (aged 7-10) diagnosed with ADHD-Combined Type participated.
  • Families received a 10-session manualized intervention (Family STARS), integrating PMT and child skills training.
  • Parent and teacher rating scales assessed ADHD and oppositional symptoms pre- and post-treatment.

Main Results:

  • Children with more severe baseline oppositional behaviors achieved comparable improvements in ADHD symptoms.
  • The degree of ADHD symptom improvement was commensurate with the initial severity of oppositional behaviors.
  • No significant difference in ADHD outcome was observed based on oppositional symptom severity.

Conclusions:

  • Baseline oppositional symptom severity does not negatively predict ADHD treatment outcomes with integrated PMT.
  • The findings support tailoring ADHD treatment targets to specific symptom domains, including oppositional behaviors.
  • Further research should explore the role of comorbid conditions in optimizing ADHD interventions.
