Folic acid absorption in regional enteritis.

C D Gerson, N Cohen

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
    |February 1, 1976
    PubMed
    Summary

Intestinal absorption of folic acid was normal in patients with regional enteritis, suggesting malnutrition, not malabsorption, causes common folic acid deficiency in this condition.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Nutritional Science
    • Clinical Medicine

    Background:

    • Regional enteritis can lead to malnutrition and nutrient deficiencies.
    • Folic acid deficiency is frequently observed in patients with regional enteritis.
    • The precise cause of folic acid deficiency in this population remains unclear.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the intestinal absorption of folic acid in patients with regional enteritis.
    • To differentiate between malabsorption and malnutrition as the cause of folic acid deficiency.

    Main Methods:

    • Jejunal perfusion with a triple lumen tube was employed.
    • Five subjects with varying degrees of regional enteritis were studied.
    • Absorption of pteroylglutamic acid was assessed.

    Main Results:

    • All five subjects demonstrated normal absorption of pteroylglutamic acid.
    • Despite varying intestinal disabilities, including steatorrhea and low serum folate levels, absorption was unaffected.
    • No evidence of impaired intestinal folic acid absorption was found.

    Conclusions:

    • Intestinal absorption of folic acid is not impaired in patients with regional enteritis.
    • Folic acid deficiency in regional enteritis is likely attributable to inadequate dietary intake (malnutrition).
    • Further research should focus on nutritional interventions rather than solely on malabsorption.
