Vitamin D does not modulate immune-mediated bone loss during ART initiation

Vitamin D and calcium supplementation did not prevent bone loss in patients starting antiretroviral therapy by altering immune cell activation or RANKL expression. Reductions in T-cell activation were observed but only modestly correlated with bone loss.

Conclusions:
- ART initiation is associated with reduced T-cell activation, independent of VitD/Ca supplementation.
- VitD/Ca supplementation does not appear to mitigate ART-associated bone loss by modulating immune activation or RANKL expression.
