Dialister pneumosintes, an oral bacterium, can cause liver abscesses. This case report details a successful treatment involving drainage and antibiotics for a liver abscess originating from a dental infection.
Area of Science:
- Oral microbiology
- Infectious diseases
- Medical diagnostics
Background:
- Dialister pneumosintes is an obligate anaerobic Gram-negative rod typically found in the oral cavity.
- Dental abscesses can serve as a nidus for systemic infections.
- Pyogenic liver abscesses require thorough etiological investigation.
Observation:
- A previously healthy 51-year-old woman developed a liver abscess.
- The liver abscess was a complication of an untreated dental abscess.
- Dialister pneumosintes was identified as the causative agent in the liver exudate.
Findings:
- The microorganism was identified using broad-range bacterial 16S rRNA gene PCR.
- The patient received treatment consisting of abscess drainage and a 4-week course of antibiotics.
- Complete recovery was achieved following the intervention.
Implications:
- This case underscores the potential for oral bacteria to cause serious systemic infections.
- Highlights the importance of considering dental health in patients with pyogenic liver abscesses.
- Emphasizes the utility of molecular methods like 16S rRNA gene PCR in identifying unusual pathogens.
