    Summary

    Higher polyunsaturated fatty acid levels in subcutaneous fat were observed in melanoma patients compared to controls. This suggests dietary polyunsaturates may play a role in melanoma development.

    Background:

    • Melanoma is a significant public health concern.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between fatty acid composition of subcutaneous adipose tissue and melanoma risk.
    • To compare fatty acid profiles between melanoma patients and matched controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of subcutaneous adipose tissue samples from 100 melanoma patients and 100 controls.
    • Gas chromatography to determine constituent fatty acids, specifically linoleic acid.
    • Comparison of polyunsaturated fatty acid percentages between patient and control groups.

    Main Results:

    • Mean percentage of linoleic acid in subcutaneous adipose tissue (PLASAT) was higher in 1984-1985 than in 1975-1976.
    • Melanoma patients exhibited a higher percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids than controls (p < 0.01).
    • Fewer melanoma patients than controls had low PLASAT (p < 0.01).

    Conclusions:

    • Elevated polyunsaturated fatty acids in adipose tissue are associated with melanoma.
    • Increased dietary polyunsaturate consumption may contribute to melanoma etiology.
    • Further research into dietary interventions for melanoma prevention is warranted.
