Background:

Neurosurgeons frequently appear in news and entertainment media.
This study analyzes how major print and online media sources portray neurosurgeons.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine the characteristics and sentiment of media coverage concerning neurosurgeons.
To identify trends and potential biases in the reporting of neurosurgical professionals.

Main Methods:

Searched major US newspapers and Google News for "neurosurgeon" from October 2012 to October 2017.
Analyzed 561 unique stories about 203 neurosurgeons, evaluating article content and neurosurgeon characteristics.

Main Results:

1005 articles were analyzed, with most featuring male neurosurgeons and those with over 20 years of practice.
Coverage was predominantly neutral (37.7%) or negative (35.4%), with positive coverage at 26.9%.
Negative stories were more frequent for male neurosurgeons early in their careers (<10 years post-residency) and in non-academic positions.

Conclusions:

Media coverage of neurosurgeons is significant and can impact their professional standing.
Awareness of media portrayal is crucial, as it presents both opportunities and risks for neurosurgeons.
