Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and describe the factors linked to sleep-related infant deaths occurring in sitting devices.

  • Analysis of 2004-2014 data from the National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention.
  • Comparison of sleep location, caregiver, supervisor, bed-sharing, and environmental factors using statistical tests.

  • 3.0% (348) of 11,779 infant sleep-related deaths occurred in sitting devices.

Conclusions:

  • Higher risk of sleep-related infant death in sitting devices is associated with child care providers or baby-sitters as supervisors.
  • Using car safety seats for sleep outside of travel contexts may increase infant risk.
