    Summary

This study details a successful case of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) for Bence-Jones multiple myeloma (MM). The patient achieved complete remission, highlighting BMT as a viable treatment for advanced multiple myeloma.

    Area of Science:

    • Hematology
    • Oncology
    • Stem Cell Transplantation

    Background:

    • Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematologic malignancy characterized by uncontrolled proliferation of plasma cells.
    • Bence-Jones multiple myeloma, a subtype, presents with osteolytic lesions and bone marrow infiltration.
    • Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is a potential curative treatment for eligible MM patients.

    Observation:

    • A 28-year-old woman with Bence-Jones MM presented with extensive osteolytic lesions and bone marrow plasmacytosis.
    • Following 6 cycles of melphalan and prednisone chemotherapy, the patient achieved clinical remission.
    • The patient underwent allogeneic BMT from a matched sibling donor.

    Findings:

    • The patient has been monitored for 23 months post-BMT.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Complete remission was confirmed by both clinical and laboratory assessments.
  • This case adds to the literature on BMT efficacy in multiple myeloma.
  • Implications:

    • Allogeneic BMT can lead to durable complete remission in patients with advanced multiple myeloma.
    • This treatment approach warrants consideration for select MM patients.
    • Further research into BMT protocols for multiple myeloma is encouraged.
