Children with absence epilepsy and rolandic spikes showed more developmental and language delays. These findings suggest rolandic spikes may indicate additional cognitive challenges in absence epilepsy patients.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Neurology
- Epileptology
Background:
- Absence epilepsy and benign epilepsy of childhood with central temporal spikes are common childhood epilepsy syndromes.
- The co-occurrence of 3-Hz generalized spike-wave discharges and rolandic spikes is rare.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare clinical features of absence epilepsy patients with and without rolandic spikes.
- To determine the clinical significance of co-occurring rolandic spikes in absence epilepsy.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of clinical data.
- Comparison of 17 children with absence epilepsy and rolandic spikes to 90 age-matched controls with absence epilepsy.
Main Results:
- Patients with absence epilepsy and rolandic spikes showed significantly higher rates of global developmental delay (29% vs 6%) and expressive language delay (24% vs 6%).
- Difficulties with school performance, particularly language-related tasks, were more prevalent in the group with rolandic spikes (35% vs 6%).
- No significant differences were found in anxiety, behavioral issues, mood disorders, or ADHD between the groups.
Conclusions:
- The presence of rolandic spikes in absence epilepsy is associated with increased epilepsy comorbidities.
- Rolandic spikes may serve as a marker for additional cognitive and language challenges in children with absence epilepsy.
- Physicians should consider these potential comorbidities when managing absence epilepsy patients with rolandic spikes.
