Depressive disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by pervasive feelings of sadness, diminished pleasure in life, and a significant impact on daily functioning. These conditions are most prevalent in individuals during their 30s and affect women at twice the rate of men. Contrary to popular belief, younger individuals are generally more susceptible to these disorders than older adults. Two key types of depressive disorders include Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and...

Summary

Personality disorder (PD) is common in major depressive disorder (MDD) but does not predict functional outcomes. This study found no significant differences in functional outcomes between patients with and without PD in an MDD clinical trial.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a prevalent mental health condition.
  • The role of personality disorders (PD) in the functional outcomes of MDD patients requires further investigation.
  • Limited research exists on PD within randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for MDD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether personality disorder (PD) predicts functional outcomes in patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD).
  • To analyze the association between PD and various functional outcome measures in an MDD patient cohort.

Main Methods:

  • Secondary analysis of data from a 12-week, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial involving 71 MDD patients.
  • Personality disorder assessed using the Standardized Assessment of Personality Abbreviated Scale.
  • Functional outcomes measured by CGI-I, Q-LES-Q, SOFAS, and RIFT, analyzed using ANCOVA, adjusting for covariates.

Main Results:

  • Personality disorder (PD) was diagnosed in 69% of the major depressive disorder (MDD) sample.
  • No statistically significant differences were observed in functional outcomes (CGI-I, Q-LES-Q, SOFAS, RIFT) at week 12 between MDD patients with and without PD.
  • These findings remained consistent after adjusting for age, sex, and baseline scores.

Conclusions:

  • Personality disorder (PD) is a frequent comorbidity in major depressive disorder (MDD) but does not appear to be a significant predictor of functional outcomes.
  • This study contributes to the limited body of evidence regarding personality disorders in MDD randomized controlled trials.
  • Further research may explore other factors influencing functional recovery in MDD patients with comorbid PD.
