Genome Annotation and Assembly03:36

Genome Annotation and Assembly

20.6K
The genome refers to all of the genetic material in an organism. It can range from a few million base pairs in microbial cells to several billion base pairs in many eukaryotic organisms. Genome assembly refers to the process of taking the DNA sequencing data and putting it all back together in a correct order to create a close representation of the original genome. This is followed by the identification of functional elements on the newly assembled genome, a process called genome annotation.

Biodiversity and Human Values

16.6K
Human civilization relies on biodiversity in many ways. Sudden changes in species biodiversity result in environmental changes that can modify weather patterns and therefore human civilizations.

lncRNA - Long Non-coding RNAs

9.8K
In humans, more than 80% of the genome gets transcribed. However, only around 2% of the genome codes for proteins. The remaining part produces non-coding RNAs which includes ribosomal RNAs, transfer RNAs, telomerase RNAs, and regulatory RNAs, among other types. A large number of regulatory non-coding RNAs have been classified into two groups depending upon their length – small non-coding RNAs, such as microRNA, which are less than 200 nucleotides in length, and long non-coding RNA...

Human Genetics

1.5K
Human genetics provides a profound framework for understanding the interplay between genetic predispositions and human psychology. At the heart of this discipline lies the study of how genes influence physical traits, behaviors, and susceptibility to diseases. Each person carries a unique genetic code that subtly or significantly shapes their psychological and behavioral landscape.
The complex relationship between genetics and psychology is observable through common biological components such...

Requirements for Human Life01:26

Requirements for Human Life

13.2K
The Earth and its atmosphere have provided humans with air, water, and food, but these are not the only requirements for survival. Humans also require a specific range of temperature and pressure that the Earth and its atmosphere provides.
Oxygen
Atmospheric air is only about 20 percent oxygen, but that oxygen is a key component of the chemical reactions that keep the body alive, including the reactions that produce ATP. Brain cells are susceptible to a lack of oxygen because they require a...

Role of Proteins in the Human Body

6.2K
Proteins are the building block of life. They are also  the most abundant macromolecules with as many diverse roles in the body. They are part of many structural components that provide unique shapes and structures to animal cells, tissues, and organs. In addition, they also act as biological catalysts and carry out several anabolic and catabolic reactions. Notably, some proteins are chemical messengers and regulate many critical processes, such as metabolism, growth, and development. They...

Area of Science:

  • Transcriptomics
  • Noncoding RNA Biology
  • Genomics

Background:

  • The human transcriptome contains numerous long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), but current catalogs are incomplete.
  • Functional characterization of lncRNAs is limited due to tissue-specific expression and functional diversity, with only about 1% well-understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To discover and characterize novel human long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs).
  • To provide a comprehensive analysis of lncRNA characteristics, including expression patterns and potential functions.
  • To identify potential lncRNA biomarkers for breast cancer.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized RNA-Sequencing (RNA-Seq) data from 1463 diverse human samples.
  • Analyzed publicly available transcriptomic and genomic data for novel lncRNA identification.
  • Assessed characteristics such as tissue specificity, abundance, polyA status, localization, conservation, and stability.

Main Results:

  • Identified and described a set of 41,400 novel human lncRNAs.
  • Characterized the discovered lncRNAs regarding their expression, localization, conservation, and stability.
  • Identified 24 novel lncRNAs as potential candidates for breast cancer biomarkers.

Conclusions:

  • The study significantly expands the catalog of human lncRNAs, contributing to a more complete annotation.
  • The characterized lncRNAs offer insights into their potential biological roles and functions.
  • Further research is necessary for validation and full elucidation of lncRNA biology and clinical applications.
