Cystic Fibrosis: Pathogenesis01:23

Cystic Fibrosis: Pathogenesis

Cystic fibrosis (CF), an autosomal recessive disorder, significantly affects the function of exocrine glands. This genetically inherited disease is characterized by the production of thick and sticky mucus, which can severely affect various organs and systems in the body.
CF is primarily caused by a genetic mutation in a chromosome 7 gene coding for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. The most common gene mutation leading to CF is the ΔF508 mutation, but...

Aneurysm II: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies

Thoracic, aortic arch and abdominal aneurysms are significant vascular conditions that can present with various clinical manifestations and lead to serious complications. Understanding these manifestations and the appropriate diagnostic studies is essential for effective management and treatment.Thoracic Aortic AneurysmsThoracic aortic aneurysms often remain asymptomatic until they reach a size that impinges on adjacent structures. They typically cause deep, diffuse chest pain that radiates to...

    Summary

Second branchial cleft cysts are rare tumors. Surgical excision is the confirmed treatment, though malignant degeneration and recurrence are possible outcomes.

    Area of Science:

    • Otolaryngology
    • Head and Neck Surgery
    • Surgical Pathology

    Background:

    • Amygdaloid cysts, or second branchial cleft cysts, are rare laterocervical cystic tumors.
    • These cysts represent approximately 2% of all laterocervical tumors.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze the anatomo-clinical features of second branchial cleft cysts.
    • To discuss the management and therapeutic strategies for these cysts.

    Main Methods:

    • A retrospective study of 34 cases diagnosed and treated between 2000 and 2013.
    • Utilized physical examination, cervical ultrasound, CT, MRI, and fine needle aspiration biopsy for diagnosis.
    • All patients underwent surgical excision for definitive treatment.

    • The study included 34 patients with an average age of 27 years and a sex ratio of 0.8.
    • Cervical masses were present in all cases, predominantly jugulo-carotid.
    • Histopathological examination confirmed second branchial cleft cysts, with 2 cases showing malignant degeneration and 1 recurrence.

    Conclusions:

    • Second branchial cleft cysts are uncommon congenital malformations.
    • Diagnosis is definitively established through histopathological examination.
    • Surgical excision remains the primary and effective treatment modality.
