Background:

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a common, progressive neurological disease in India.
It is characterized by mental decline, myoclonus, EEG abnormalities, and elevated anti-measles antibodies in cerebrospinal fluid.
Acute fulminant SSPE has a rapid, fatal course within six months.

Observation:

A 10-year-old boy presented with a 14-day history of continuous involuntary jerky movements affecting the left side of his body and head.
The patient exhibited highly increased anti-measles IgG antibody titers in both cerebrospinal fluid and serum.

Findings:

The case demonstrates that acute, rapidly progressive SSPE can manifest as acute encephalitis syndrome.
Elevated anti-measles IgG titers confirmed the diagnosis in the cerebrospinal fluid and serum.

Implications:

This presentation highlights the importance of considering SSPE in children with acute encephalitis syndrome, especially in endemic regions.
Early recognition and diagnosis of rapidly progressive SSPE are crucial for patient management and understanding disease spectrum.
