A displacement current is analogous to a real current in Ampère's law, participating in Ampère's law the same way as the usual conduction current. However, it is produced by a changing electric field. Displacement current is defined in terms of a time-varying electric field, and also has an associated displacement current density. By adding a term accounting for displacement current, Maxwell modified the existing Ampère's law, which is now called generalized Ampère's law.

  • Searched four major course inventories and conducted an online keyword search.
  • Collected data on course title, description, audience, and delivery method.
  • Expert reviewers categorized learning levels, capabilities, and functions; descriptive statistics were applied.

Main Results:

  • Identified 3662 disaster trainings, with 65% for professionals (53% in public health).
  • 83% were distance learning; 50% focused on 3 specific capabilities; 38% covered chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives (CBRNE) threats.
  • All courses were knowledge-based, with 99.6% imparting only lower levels of learning.

Conclusions:

  • Despite numerous courses, significant gaps exist in training content, audience focus, educational strategies, and delivery methods.
  • These gaps are particularly notable for health and public health professionals.
  • Addressing these deficiencies is essential for enhancing disaster workforce preparedness.
