Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and pool data on short-term mortality in elective vascular surgery performed during weekends versus weekdays.

  • Inclusion of retrospective studies comparing short-term mortality (≤30 days) for elective vascular surgery.
  • Exclusion of urgent/emergency procedures and analysis of vascular surgery subgroups only.

  • Analysis of four studies (131,201 patients) revealed a significantly higher pooled short-term mortality risk for weekend elective vascular surgery (OR, 2.41).
  • The weekend effect was more pronounced in abdominal aortic aneurysm repair and carotid surgery.
  • In the US, the weekend effect was particularly evident for aortic aneurysm repair.

Conclusions:

  • Elective vascular surgery performed on weekends is associated with increased short-term mortality risk.
  • Enhanced perioperative management strategies during weekends are necessary to mitigate these risks and improve patient outcomes.
