Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential association between specific IL-18 gene polymorphisms (-607C>A and -137G>C) and the risk of developing Tuberculosis.
  • To synthesize existing evidence through a meta-analysis to determine the role of these polymorphisms in TB pathogenesis.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed and Embase databases.
  • A meta-analysis was performed using four distinct statistical models.
  • Data extraction and quality assessment were carried out by two independent reviewers.

Main Results:

  • Five studies comprising 1293 TB patients and 1724 controls were included in the meta-analysis.
  • No statistically significant association was found between the IL-18 -607C>A polymorphism and TB risk across various genetic models.
  • Similarly, the IL-18 -137G>C polymorphism showed no significant association with TB risk in the analyzed population.

Conclusions:

  • The current meta-analysis indicates that IL-18 -607C>A and -137G>C polymorphisms are not significant risk factors for Tuberculosis.
  • Larger-scale, well-designed studies are required to definitively validate these findings and explore other potential genetic associations with TB.
