Summary

Serum thyrotrophin receptor antibody (TRAb) and thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) levels are linked to early hypothyroidism after radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy in Graves' disease patients. These antibodies may help predict prognosis following 131I treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Graves' disease (GD) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by hyperthyroidism.
  • Radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy, specifically 131I, is a common treatment for GD.
  • The development of early hypothyroidism post-RAI therapy requires further investigation regarding antibody roles.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze dynamic changes in serum thyrotrophin receptor antibody (TRAb) and thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) before and after RAI treatment in GD patients.
  • To determine if TRAb and TPOAb influence the occurrence of early hypothyroidism after 131I therapy for Graves' hyperthyroidism.

Main Methods:

  • 240 newly diagnosed GD patients were assessed before and at 3, 6, and 12 months post-131I therapy.
Keywords:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Serum FT3, FT4, TSH, TPOAb, and TRAb concentrations were measured using chemiluminescent immunoassay and radio-receptor assay.
  • Patients were categorized into early hypothyroidism (group A) and non-early hypothyroidism (group B) groups based on onset within one year.
  • Main Results:

    • Serum TRAb and TPOAb levels peaked at 6 months post-RAI therapy and returned to baseline by 12 months.
    • Significant differences in TRAb levels were observed between groups at 6 months (P<0.01).
    • Group A (early hypothyroidism) exhibited higher TPOAb levels than group B both pre- and post-RAI therapy (P<0.05).

    Conclusions:

    • Serum TRAb and TPOAb levels are closely associated with the development of early hypothyroidism after RAI treatment for GD.
    • These antibodies play a crucial role in assessing prognosis following 131I therapy in Graves' disease patients.
